TREKKING ITINERARY:

Day 1: Arusha – Machame Camp

  • Elevation: 1,830m to 3,100m
  • Distance: 18km
  • Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
  • Habitat: Montane Forest
    Begin your journey with a drive from Arusha to the Machame Gate, passing through the scenic Machame village. Start the trek through lush rainforest trails, with possible wildlife sightings. The trail can be muddy and slippery, so trekking poles and gaiters are recommended. Arrive at Machame Camp for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: Machame Camp – Shira Camp

  • Elevation: 3,100m to 3,840m
  • Distance: 9km
  • Hiking Time: 4–6 hours
  • Habitat: Moorland
    After breakfast, trek through the forest, gradually ascending to the Shira Plateau. The terrain changes from dense vegetation to moorland, offering incredible views of Kibo Peak. Reach Shira Camp in the afternoon for rest and acclimatization.

Day 3: Shira Camp – Lava Tower – Barranco Camp

  • Elevation: 3,840m to 4,630m (Lava Tower), then down to 3,860m
  • Distance: 15km
  • Hiking Time: 5–7 hours
  • Habitat: Semi-desert
    Ascend towards the Lava Tower, a key acclimatization point, before descending to Barranco Camp. The trek provides stunning views and a chance to adjust to higher altitudes. Though ending at nearly the same elevation as the start, this day is crucial for acclimatization.

Day 4: Barranco Camp – Barafu Camp

  • Elevation: 3,860m to 4,600m
  • Distance: 13km
  • Hiking Time: 8 hours
  • Habitat: Alpine Desert
    After breakfast, tackle the challenging Barranco Wall before heading towards Karanga Valley. Enjoy lunch at 4,200m before continuing to Barafu Camp. From here, prepare for the final summit push. Rest early to be ready for the midnight ascent.

Day 5: Barafu Camp – Summit – Mweka Hut

  • Elevation: 4,600m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak), then down to 3,100m
  • Distance: 7km ascent / 23km descent
  • Hiking Time: 6–8 hours ascent / 7–8 hours descent
  • Habitat: Glacial Summit, Stone Scree, and Alpine Desert
    Begin the final ascent between midnight and 2 AM, reaching Stella Point before the final push to Uhuru Peak—the highest point in Africa. Witness a breathtaking sunrise before descending to Mweka Hut for the night. This is the most physically demanding yet rewarding day.

Day 6: Mweka Camp – Arusha

  • Elevation: 3,100m to 1,830m
  • Distance: 15km
  • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours

    After breakfast, complete the final descent to Mweka Gate. Receive your summit certificate before transferring back to Arusha.
